Minister of Education and Sports Dulles Alahapperuma said the Cabinet approval has been granted to increase the number of National Schools from the current 371 to 1,000.
Minister Alahapperuma said that there are 10,175 schools functioning in the island and only 371 are National Schools.
The Ministry of Education has planned to implement a program to increase the number of National Schools to 1,000 by developing three schools equipped with all facilities in each Divisional Secretariat Division and upgrading them as National Schools with the objective of providing free, equitable and qualitative education to every child. A special Technical Committee has been established to identify these schools.
The Ministry of Education has also planned to initiate a State of the Art National School in each District with tri-lingual educational opportunities and to initiate 20 such schools in the next two year period.
Accordingly, the proposal made by the Minister of Education for the implementation of the proposed programs was approved in principle by the Cabinet.
